Here’s a glimpse into a contemporary Bachelor Apartment Bankside, London that we designed for a private client last year. This project perfectly captures the concept of ‘High-Low’ interior design—a principle I strongly believe in when creating beautiful yet practical homes.
One of my favourite elements in this space is the textural contrast between the understated linen tablecloth and the sumptuous dark blue velvet Series 7 chairs by Fritz Hansen. The mix of luxury designer furniture with more affordable, everyday pieces creates a space that feels effortlessly stylish yet liveable.
What Is ‘High-Low’ Interior Design?
The High-Low approach to interior design is all about knowing when to save and when to splurge. In essence, it’s about spending wisely on the pieces that truly matter and complementing them with more budget-friendly options.
At Kinder Design, we apply this principle to all our interior design projects in London, always looking for ways to maximise value without compromising on style or quality. I often return to the mantra:
💡 "Buy once, buy well."
There’s nothing more frustrating—or bad for the planet—than buying cheap, low-quality furniture that falls apart within a few years.
Where to Save & Where to Invest in Interior Design
✔ Be resourceful – Repurpose and refresh what’s already there. ✔ Opt for high-street brands – As long as the quality is reasonable, many brands offer great value. ✔ Consider vintage furniture – Timeless and sustainable. ✔ Invest in design classics – Pieces like these Fritz Hansen chairs stand the test of time.
(Although, I’ll admit, velvet dining chairs might not be the most practical choice! Luckily, in this case, our client eats out frequently and doesn’t entertain much at home, so they’ve worked out beautifully.)
